The Productivity-Identity Crisis: Why You’re Not Lazy, Just Misaligned
Here’s a thought experiment for you: Is it possible that you’re not actually “lazy,” but that you’re just stuck doing things that don’t align with how you see yourself?
It’s a loaded question, I know. But let’s indulge for the 3 minutes it’ll take you to read this…
The Identity-Motivation Connection
Imagine you’re someone who’s trying to exercise regularly, but every time you throw on your New Balances (or whatever), there’s an annoying voice in your head that whispers:
“Who you kiddin’? You’re not a gym person.”
I’m pretty sure this voice (that we’ve all heard at some point) is more powerful than many of us realize.
It’s not just a passing thought — it’s likely your identity trying to put up a fight. And look… We are wired to avoid things that contradict how we see ourselves.
So, no matter how much you want to get fit, if you are unable to believe you’re the kind of person to prioritize health and fitness, your brain will probably try to fight you every step of the way on it.
This disconnect between what you want to achieve and who you think you are? That right there is the productivity-identity crisis.
